General Education Reforms initiated by the Ministry of Education and Sciences of Georgia are addressed to improve teaching and learning quality. Despite the multiple professional development programmes implemented by the National Centre for Teacher Professional Development, today the quality of teaching in many regions of Georgia falls behind the set standards. There are numerous cases of teachers teaching subjects out of their competences. Some schools do not have certain subject teachers. Therefore job openings announced through www.pedagogi.ge remain vacant for months. Such a situation produces the impairment of quality.
The situation is especially challenging in the mountainous regions such as Shuaxevi, Khulo, Khelvachauri, Chokhatauri, Chiatura, Borjomi, Akhalkalaki, Akhmeta, Signagi, Tsalka, Marneuli, Dmanisi, Kareli, Dusheti, Ambrolauri, Oni, Tsageri, Martvili, Mestia, Abasha. The survey showed that teaching profession is not quite popular among university graduates and the youth rarely choose teaching as a life-time profession. Considering these factors, the National Center for Teacher Professional Development created a project “Teach for Georgia” the main goal of which was to attract and maintain qualified staff in schools, provide pre-service as well as in-service trainings for the cohort, and promote their professional development throughout their two-year commitment.
The main goal of the programme is to improve the quality of teaching and learning in schools, especially in high-mountainous regions, since these are the ones most threatened by the absence of qualified and motivated teaching staff. Key goals:
- enhancement of quality of teaching and learning in schools; - attracting and retaining effective teaching talents; - advancing the teaching profession and providing incentives for teachers to teach for a career; |
